Tips for Litter Box Training Your Kitten

One of the benefits of owning a cat is that they are naturally very clean animals that can be easily trained to use a litter box, preventing the need for keeping them outside or dashing home at lunch to let them out.

Ideally the best time to start litter box training your kitten is when you first bring him or her home. Caring for your new friend is a learning experience for both of you.

Tip #1

Take your kitten at least once every hour into the bathroom and place them beside or inside the litter box. Try again every 30 minutes until they go.

Tip #2

If he or she messes somewhere else in the house do not punish the kitten, they simply didn’t know where to go when they had the urge.

Tip #3

Tip #4

It is important to leave some waste material in the box, as the kitten will be alerted by the scent of their own waste that this is where they are supposed to go.

There are a lot of options for litter boxes for indoor cats, including covered boxes that give privacy and keep litter from being spayed all over the room.

Outdoor cats can also be trained to only use certain areas of the yard, rather than flower beds and neighbors' planters.  Keep a small area tilled so it's easy to dig in, and clean out waste material every week.
