In the world of cats, cat breeds with blue eyes are a bit rare. Every cat is born with blue eyes, but this isn’t because their eyes are actually blue. A kitten has blue eyes because the melanin pigment in their eyes isn’t fully developed. So as they grow up they lose their baby blues and trade them out for usually a yellow, green, or brown color.

If you want a cat with blue eyes, there are a couple of breeds that always have blue eyes. So we’re here to help you find the perfect cat breed for your home and tastes.

Cat Breeds with Blue Eyes

Cat breeds that always have blue eyes are called pointed breeds, due to the nature of their fur coloring. These breeds are light-colored cats with all of the tips or points of their bodies (ears, paws, tail, etc.) being a darker brown color. These cats will always have blue eyes.

White cats are also more likely to have blue eyes, even if they aren’t a pointed breed. But if they are plain white there’s no guarantee that they’ll have blue eyes, just a likelihood. That being said, here are the pointed cat breeds that have blue eyes.

Siamese

Siamese cat

Siamese cats are “pointed” cats, meaning they have a lighter body and darker extremities. Point coloration in cats is a form of partial albinism resulting from a mutation in tyrosinase, an enzyme involved with melanin production. Pointed cat breeds always have blue eyes or a close variation, and Siamese cats always have blue eyes. They can also be smaller cats than other breeds.

Balinese

Balinese cat

The Balinese breed is a beautiful long-haired cat with striking blue eyes. They are known for their friendliness and loving personality – a cat that pampers its owner! A Balinese is a purebred long-haired Siamese, and being a much-sought-after breed, it can be very expensive to purchase a Balinese cat.

Birman

Birman cat breed

The Birman breed is a very loving and affectionate breed that makes a great companion for those looking for a cuddly, lovey cat. The Birman cat is also called the “Sacred Cat of Burma”. Its white paws set it apart from other pointed cats. He has a playful side, but is pretty relaxed and happy to be loved on. The Birman isn’t a highly vocal cat, but does show his affection with purrs and coos. He makes a great therapy cat.

Himalayan

Himalayan Blue Point

The Himalayan cat is a long-haired pointed cat, which were derived from crossing the Persian with the Siamese. The Himalayan tends to have a round body with short legs and they can be found in many different colors, so they are classified by these colors: blue-point, seal, lilac, chocolate, red or flame point, and cream point.

Likewise, there are two types of facial structure – traditional or doll-face and the peke-faced or ultra-typed which has the more extreme squashed-looking facial features.

Ojos Azules

Ojos Azules

If you know Spanish, you already know that Ojos Azules translates to “blue eyes”. Ojos Azules cats have intense blue eyes, but that doesn’t appear to be linked with the gene that causes a particular coat color, so you can find Ojos Azules cats with blue eyes and dark coats, unlike Siemese and Persians which are light colored. They are generally described as affectionate, loyal, friendly, gentle, and playful.

Ragdoll

Ragdoll cat

The Ragdoll is a cat breed with a color point coat and striking blue eyes. Their form is large and muscular and their coat is silky soft and semi-longhair. Ragdoll cats are happy to be indoor cats and they have an affectionate, docile nature. They love to be around people and can suffer if left alone for long periods of time, so probably not the cat for someone who is away a lot.

Persian

Persian Cat

One of the most well-known and loved cats with blue eyes is the white Persian, with white, silky fur, a cherub-like face, and striking blue eyes, the Persian cat is a relatively quiet and sweet cat who loves to lounge around. You can find Persian cats in other colors that don’t have blue eyes, but the white Persian is one of the most popular.

Tonkinese

Tonkinese Kitten

The Tonkinese breed is a result of crossing a Siamese and Burmese cat, giving them all the best qualities of both of these blue-eyed breeds. They are best as indoor cats because they lack defensive instincts that will keep them safe. If you take them outside, be sure to have a leash. They tend to be entertaining, affectionate, intelligent cats.

CONCLUSION

Blue-eyed cats are gorgeous little creatures that can bring a lot of joy and entertainment to your household, and you’ll also find that these blue-eyed breeds mentioned above are docile, easy to get along with, and undemanding friends who are looking for love and companionship.
